Jacinto Benavente, recipient of the 1922 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Madrid, Spain. He was the youngest of three children born to Venancia Martinez and Mariano Benavente. His father was a pediatrician. He was educated at San Isidore Institute and the University of Madrid. He studied law but became an actor and a journalist.

Benavente wrote over 170 plays. His first work, TEATRO FANTASTICO, was published when he was 26. He was associated with a group of writers known as the Generation of '98.

Jacinto Benavente died in Madrid in 1954.
